Fashion Meets Manga

Some time in January, I came across a short (109pgs) fashion book. I bought it because it combined my favorite things: beautiful drawings and great fashion (well, I'm not fashionable, but I like to pretend).

The title is 「おしゃれ「着こなす」ベストコレクション」(Oshare Kikonasu* Best Collection/Best Collection of Stylish Fashion) by ashimai (written in romaji, like this).

In the prologue, she writes about how difficult it is to choose clothing, despite having a closet filled with clothes. There was just something missing, and one day she passed by a girl on the street and had an epiphany; even a simple outfit could look great by paying attention to a few points. The book is the product of people-on-the-street outfits she's seen.

One area that caught my eye was the section on hoodies.

There, she explained how a hoodie in a simple color (grey) and with a double zipper, can be up-graded to a great fashion piece.

Typically, hoodies have a single zipper. However, as we all know, they can bunch up around your stomach when walking and especially when sitting. And they aren't really what comes to mind when thinking of fashion or work-wear. ashimai explained that with a double zipper, you can take your outfit to the next level.

Below is the woman on the street she sketched. Wow. I looked at this and thought: "I can wear this to work." She writes that she always pulls the strings out of her hoodies. Adding a pleated skirt gives the outfit some elegance and pumps make it look well put together. What do you think?

For the past two weeks, I've been scouring the internet and searching through shops to see if I could find an appropriate hoodie. At some point I remembered a double-zip hoodie I bought at H&M five years ago and dug through my closet to find it. Luckily, it's beige and the pattern on the front uses a plain thread that doesn't stand out. I wore it twice to work this week and no one had any problems! I'd love to try it with one of those ballet-looking skirts that I see people wearing, but that might be pushing it for my office.

What I did discover through my search is that the double-zip hoodie seems to be poised to be the new "thing" this year. One Japanese clothing store was selling them for 18,000 yen (about $150). I'm just excited that I can get a second use out of something in my closet :3
